President , and Public Relations Director of the Spice Island Cultural Festival , Gemma played an instrumental role in celebrating and preserving the rich tapestry of Caribbean culture in Montreal . However , Gemma ' s commitment to her community extended far beyond cultural celebrations . Over two decades ago , she founded the Playmas Montreal Cultural Association , a beacon of diversity and inclusion dedicated to celebrating Caribbean traditions in the Canadian context . Through Playmas , Gemma organized events , festivals , and workshops that not only enriched the lives of Montreal residents but also fostered a sense of belonging and cultural pride among members of the Caribbean diaspora .
One of Gemma ' s most significant contributions to her community is the GemStar Circle of Excellence Scholarship and Mentorship Program . Recognizing the importance of supporting highperforming Black students , Gemma spearheaded this initiative , providing financial assistance with the support of BMO Bank of Montreal and Groupe 3737 , and mentorship from various Black professionals to help students realize their academic dreams . Gemma , a founding member of the Spice Island Cultural Day Association of Quebec ( SICDAQ ), serves as the consultant for its renowned Spice Island Cultural Festival . With extensive experience , she has previously served as Vice President and Public Relations Officer within the organization . Additionally , she currently fulfills the role of coordinator for The SICDAQ Special Edition of the Melange Travel & Lifestyle Magazine . Her life serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration , reminding us of the importance of cherishing our roots while embracing new opportunities and experiences .
In her personal life , Gemma finds immense joy in her role as a wife , mother , and grandmother . Her family is her anchor , providing love and support as she continues to make a difference in her community . Now retired , Gemma enjoys her welldeserved rest but remains as active and committed to her community as ever .
