What are some of the societal benefits of youth being involved with a community steel band ? Do you think it is a meaningful pursuit ? There are many benefits to be derived for our youths , from their involvement in positive and meaningful activities . Being actively involved in a community steelband is one such activity . There are many evidences to prove that process of remembering the notes learnt in order to play a song also aids with the educational learning process , in particular memorizing what was taught – retentive memory . The involvement also keeps them engaged and away from other societal ills such as involvement in drugs and other negative behaviors . It just seems to compliment many other meaningful educational and recreational pursuits . It helps them with their social skills in areas as time management , critical thinking , conflict resolution and team building to list a few .
From a financial standpoint , they are renumerated for performances with the band or on their own ‘ gigging ’ at different places – EC $ 200.00 per hour for individual gig . Over the years a number of Pan Players have been recruited to tour and play the steelpan on Cruise ships thereby generating great financial income – minimum of approximately US $ 2,700.00 monthly . There are many other areas including tutoring . If the path of Pan tuning is pursued as a career , thousands of dollars can be made . Think of this , the minimal cost for a single tenor is approximately US $ 1,000.00 .
What is your involvement with Touch of Grace Gospel band I am a founding member and presently the Bass Guitar player , Leader and Musical Director of Touch of Grace Gospel / Inspirational Band . The group started in 2005 under the leadership of Isaac Frazer . Our Mission : “ To fulfil our Christian duties by sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ through music and song , encouraging others in their walk with Christ , and in the process strengthening our faith and trust in God .”
Over the years I have worked very closely with Mr . Halim Brizan , one of the leading forces behind the success of the group . He is the Vocal Director and also a founding member . His brother Daman Brizan is the Manager . At present Touch of Grace has approximately 20 members comprising singers and musicians . We have quite a few achievements under our belt . These includes the hosting of eight ( 8 ) of our own concerts , the last held April 2022 .
Touch of Grace has performed in many events including weddings , concerts , church events , funerals , the Methodist Annual concerts and Government Information Services ( GIS ) ‘ Made for TV ’ concert and many charitable events . It was the band backing contestants for wellknown GBN Gospel Challenge competition for 2015 , 2016 and 2017 / 18 .
The group was recognised and commended for its powerful ministry at these shows and also in getting the best out of the contestants , through the vocal training and other singing and performance techniques provided to them . Touch Of Grace also performed at two
