and I had to request permission from my grand parents to go there . It was a bit easy to get consent as my dad was a member of the band . He played the Bass Pan . I must add that Mr . Denis ‘ Briggy ’ Phillip affectionately called Uncle Denis , spotted my talent and potential at an early age and encouraged and motivated me to take playing the pan seriously . He pushed me and I will forever be grateful to him for that .
Your name has been synonymous with Commancheros Steel Orchestra for years . What will you say is your proudest moment with the band , thus far ? Some of my proudest moments associated with the steelpan and in particular Commancheros , were :
1 . Performing with the band in the National Steelband Music Festival competition which our band won in 1975 , 76 and 77 . 2 . Being the arranger for our band ’ s first ever Panorama title in 1994 , was another proud moment , I still reminisce and relish hearing the announcement ; “ and the Panorama champion is …. Commancheros ”. 3 . Arranging an entire song ‘ For the Good Times ’, with full orchestration for the first time in the early seventies and performing it to the public . 4 . Being selected to perform and tour on board cruise liners in the early eighties , as these cruises allowed me to visit many different countries especially in the Caribbean and South America , learning about and appreciating different cultures .
