Murrel Katherine

Mitchell by Lexan Fletcher

Murrel Katherine Mitchell was the 2nd of four children . She is the only one alive and is now 99 years old . Mrs Mitchell is the mother of Dr . Keith Mitchell , Prime Minister of Grenada , Carriacou and Petite Martinique .
Early Days
Growing up she had to take care of her siblings , a role she enjoyed . She reflected on the memories of helping her mother as being tough but one which she carried out with grace . Her mother was single and had to work hard to care for her children .
For many of the neighbors her name was “ petite mama ’ because she enjoyed taking care of her siblings , cooking , and helping them to get ready every day for school . It was also because she was small . She chuckled as she made mention of having to stand on a box to iron .
She loved to bake .
One of her fondest memories was singing at her school concert with her sister . After the performance , she recalled being picked up in celebratory fashion as everyone shouted their names . It was also the moment she met many of her family members whom she did not know .
Motherhood
Ms . Mitchell gave birth to 6 children , 3 boys , and 3 girls . Her first was born when she was 24 years old .
Dr . Keith Mitchell , Grenada ’ s Prime Minister was the 2nd and considered a miracle baby as he was very small . If there was one thing that distracted him it was the game of Cricket and his brothers would always be with him . She recalled sending him off to the shop one day to purchase yeast as she was preparing to bake bread and he didn ' t return until hours after , only to discover he stopped along the way to play cricket and lost track of the time . That day , he and his brothers got a good scolding from her .
