At a ceremony in the Governor's Mansion, NC Governor Pat McCrory proclaimed
April 22, 2014 "Lady Bears Women's Basketball Day" in commemoration of their
accomplishment in winning the 2014 CIAA Basketball Championship. Gov. McCrory
welcomed the Shaw University team, and praised them for their determination
inning allowed the Lady Rams to score and win the CIAA title. The Lady Falcons
needed two wins to win the league crown in the double-elimination tournament.
The Lady Falcons lose three players, but return the nucleus that played a key
role in their recent success. They will likely be among the favorites to win the
championship next season.
The foursome of Daniel Jamieson, Taffawee Johnson , Burkheart Ellis Jr. and
Jermaine Jones of Saint Augustine's University ran a season-high 39.19 seconds
in the men's 4x100 Championship of America relay on the final day of the 2014
Penn Relays before a crowd of 49,103 at Franklin Field on Saturday, April 26th. The
men's 4x100 squad finished third in the event, which was televised by NBC Sports
Network. Only UTech of Jamaica (38.71) and Division I LSU (38.83) ran faster than
the Falcons, who entered the prestigious meet as the top-ranked Division II 4x100
relay squad. Five Division I schools were in the eight-team relay.

The Duke Blue Devils were picked as the No. 1 overall seed for the 2014 NCAA
Lacrosse Tournament for the third time in the program’s history. Duke was also
the top seed in 2007 and 2008 and is 5-2 overall at that position. It marks the 16th
time in 18 NCAA Tournament appearances Duke has been picked as one of the
top eight seeds and sixth time in the top three. With final exams done, the Duke
Lacrosse team has the benefit of being able to focus on getting better every day.
Looking to play their best lacrosse in May, the Blue Devils benefit from being able
to spend quality time with each other on and off the field. They have done just that
over the past seven seasons, sporting a 19-5 in the NCAA Tournament under head
coach John Danowski with two NCAA Championships under their belts and seven
consecutive appearances on the final weekend.
The five finalists for the Tewaaraton Award will be announced May 8th by the
Tewaaraton Award Foundation. Duke’s Jordan Wolf, Deemer Class and Myles
Jones are three of the 28 nominees. Two Blue Devils – Matt Danowski and Ned
Crotty – have won the top honor in collegiate lacrosse. Class and Jones are two of
four sophomores represented on the list, while Wolf is widely considered to be one
of the five finalists.
NC State is one of six schools around the country this spring to host the regional
round of the 2014 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships. The Raleigh Regional will
be played from May 15-17 at Lonnie Poole Golf Course on NC State’s campus.
Admission is free to the three-day event.
Saint Augustine's University's magnificent run in the CIAA Softball Tournament
ended in the championship game with a 5-4 loss to Winston-Salem State University
at the Virginia State University field on Saturday, April 19th. The championship
appearance was the first in recent memory for the Lady Falcons, who scared the
Lady Rams in the last inning after trailing 4-1. The Lady Falcons scored three runs
