50 YEARS AFTER THE “WAR ON POVERTY”
2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the “War on Poverty”. The North
Carolina Legislative Black Caucus has joined faith-based leaders and community
advocates for a series of Town Hall Meetings to discuss poverty in NC. The first of the
series was held in Durham on Thursday April 3rd at St. Joseph’s AME Church. HKon
J Coordinator Minister Curtis Gatewood (far right) delivered an emphatic speech to
the community members in attendance about results of the recent NC Poverty Tour.

SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC. CELEBRATES 35TH ANNIVERSARY
The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. celebrated
its 35th Anniversary on March 15, 2014 at the George Watts Hill Alumni Center on the campus of
UNC Chapel Hill. The keynote speaker was the Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, President NC State
Conference of the NAACP. Dr. Mary Phillips (left), Dr. Sybil Henderson (2nd from right) and
V. Dianne Pledger (right), President of Chapel Hill Carrboro Area Alumnae Chapter presents a
check for $5,000 to Dr. Barber (2nd from left) to support the NC State Conference’s social action
mission. Dr. Barber commented that, “This was the largest single donation of this kind from a
fraternal organization in the state”. Former State Senator, Ellie Kinnaird (inset), was presented
the chapter’s inaugural Impact Award for her visionary social and political actions benefiting
