Jordan High School Auditorium in anticipation of the Durham Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Jabberwock Scholarship Gala. The 2013-14 theme of this annual event was “Renaissance: Clever & Captivating Jewels”. The ten debutantes expressed their renaissance talent with a dynamic opening dance performance that revealed a modern day twist on the 20’s style dance along to ‘Show Me How You Burlesque’ by Christina Aguilera. The event continued with many memorable moments. The moment many awaited came with the crowning of Miss Jabberwock 201314 Salita Greene. The Jabberwock Court consisted of 1st Runner-up: Taylor Owens, 2nd Runner-up: Joia Freeman, 3rd Runnerup: Shawnesi Russell and 4th Runner-up: Ariana Johnson. Other superlative awards presented were Most Unique Style – Taylor Owens & Trae’ranz White; Most Sincere – Victoria Jackson & P. Benjamin Shaw, III; Deepest Thinker – Kayla Tate & Marvin Tillman, Jr., Best Smile – Kayla Daniels & Travis Miller, Life of the Party – Kayla Tate & Kelly Moore; Most Persistent – Salita Greene & Zairee Parker, Rare Jewel – Brandi Arledge & Oreyane Tate, Dancing Machine – Taylor Owens & Jabin Bethea, Most Dedicated – Shawnesi Russell & Zairee Parker, and Mr. Personality – Kelly Moore and Miss Congeniality – Joia Freeman. Brandi Arledge, a Josephine Dobbs Clement Early College High School junior, is the daughter of Brian Arledge and Vickie Barbee-Arledge. Her escort was Oreyane Tate and she was mentored by April Pyatt and Ayana Moore. The Jabberwock was initially presented in 1925 in Boston, Massachusetts. Jabberwock, a word copyrighted by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., derives from Lewis Carroll’s tale Alice in Wonderland nonsense poem “Jabberwocky,” in which it was customary for creatures from throughout the kingdom to gather annually to present a gala event. The Durham Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has held this annual scholarship program since 1962, awarding scholarships to Durham County residents. The Jabberwock Gala is a formal event resulting from the culmination of social activities, community service, educational workshops, and scholarship fundraising opportunities. The scholarships awarded to the 2013-14 debutantes Jabberwock candidate were in excess of $60,000.00. Ms. Asha Felder and NCCU Psychology Professor Dr. Jonathan Livingston were outstanding in their role as Mistress and Master of Ceremony. Gloria McNeil - Durham Alumnae Chapter President, Sonya Harris (2nd Vice President and Jabberwock Chair) and Chonna Campbell (Jabberwock Co-Chair) coordinated the event, along with Durham Alumnae Chapter members assisting in many roles to make the Jabberwock Gala a huge success. 27
