‘919’ - HOME OF CHAMPS BALLIN’ OUT
By Lawrence “King Law” Davis
After a very successful season by LeVelle Morton and the NCCU
Eagles, they found themselves MEAC champions. This landed them
the 14th seed in the NCAA tournament, placing them against a strong 3rd seed Iowa State. The
Eagles fought hard but watched the Cyclones run away with it in the end, losing 93-75. This marks
a rough ending to a productive season from the NCCU senior class, headlined by Jeremy Ingram
and Emanual Chapman. Ingram averaged 20.8 ppg, landing him 17th in the nation in scoring this
season. Chapman finished with 6.9 ppg and 6.5 assistpg, putting him as number 7 in the nation. He
also finished in the top 40 in steals with 2.09/game.
The Lady Eagles had a roller coaster year, finishing on a loss to Howard University in the MEAC
tournament.
The Shaw Lady Bears finished a great regular season with a CIAA championship. They went on to
lose to Gannon College in the first round of the NCAA regional tournament.
NC State Men’s team ended its season in the second round of the NCAA tournament as the 12th
seeded Wolfpack fell to 5th seeded St. Louis. T.J. Warren
led all scorers in the game with 28 points. 2014 ACC Player
of the Year and Durham native Warren decided to enter this
year’s NBA draft after the season. He led the team in scoring
averaging 24.0ppg and 7rpg.
The Lady Wolfpack fell in the first round of the NCAA
tournament to BYU 72-57. Miah Spencer led the wolfpack in
scoring with 16 points on the night. Markeisha Gatlin led the
wolfpack this season in scoring and rebounding, averaging
17.4 and 7.2 respectively.
After losing to Virginia in the ACC championship game,
Duke men fell to Mercer in the second round of the NCAA
tournament. Mercer, starting 5 seniors, found a way to come
from behind and pull away to a victory against the Blue Devils. Duke looks to reload with a great
recruiting class coming in. The biggest issue is leadership. Will Freshman of the Year Jabari Parker
along with captain Rodney Hood return next season? Duke assistant coach Steve Wojciechowski
was hired as Marquette’s new head coach.W
