Applications
The initial focus is on the PUR coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers( CASE) sector. For example, POM polyols enhance the compatibility of industrial adhesives with non-polar substrates, such as PE and PP films. This enhances both adhesive performance and recyclability. A packaging film bonded with a POM-polyol-based adhesive can undergo mechanical recycling by extrusion with fewer defects than an equivalent PPG-based benchmark.
Significant potential also exists in the lubricants sector. The high thermal stability and low friction coefficient of POM, which is now available in a liquid matrix for the first time, make POM-based polyols attractive candidates for sustainable, highperformance lubricants, especially for industrial machinery, turbines, or refrigeration compressors. In the long term, these fluids could also serve as an alternative to PFAS-containing materials in certain applications.
Outlook
Novel materials only succeed when they are developed in close proximity to their intended application. From the beginning, Power2Polymers have worked within a network of application partners and lead customers to develop novel products together based on real formulation and processing requirements. The feedback and iterations from these partnerships have been crucial in shaping the product grades and roadmap.
The two main goals this year are to prepare the manufacturing process for further scaling and to produce larger sample batches with a contract manufacturer. In parallel, several partner-developed applications should advance from the pre-development stage to concrete products and early production scale-up.
In addition to polyols, functionalised, short-chain, POM-containing building blocks, such as NCO-functionalised components for polyurethanes, are
being investigated as a potential addition to the product portfolio. While this is still in the early stages of technological readiness, the possibilities are strong. ●
