There is a vital difference between invention and innovation , says Dr Lukas von Hippel of Von Con
The chemical and biotechnology industries have been demanding innovation urgently for many decades . There are various drivers for this development , mainly as a defensive way of dealing with overall project risk and reduced appetite for investment in production .
A radical change in the focus of many companies around the globe came by means of newly implemented sustainability criteria like the UN ’ s 17 Sustainable Development Goals , supported by the European Green
Deal . Organisations around the globe are now trying to become carbonneutral , and states and continents are following them with ambitious targets .
The ambiguity of such measures can be seen by statistics that seem to be ( more or less ) balanced when it comes to measures . For example , Germany claims to move local industry to sustainable energy consumption but is also one of the biggest CO 2 emitters in Europe while importing electricity from French nuclear power plants . In the pro and con discussion about such matters , opponents may even use the same statistics but interpret them differently .
In a global industry it is obvious that emissions will not stop at a border and this planet is a single ecosystem . In other words , politics and industry will somehow have to bring national or organisational ambition and global ecosystems into balance . Depending on the size of an organisation , the same company may run operations in various countries and on several continents , making harmonisation of measurements even more relevant .
Such tasks are difficult and not only driven by different political opinions . Local standards may supersede global ambitions . From a single corporate perspective , the world has not become an easier place in the last few decades and the need to react to many stakeholders with sometimes
