BIOCIDES microbial resistance. Crucially, no organic preservatives are required when Adins Protection is integrated into the formula.
These additives are mixed directly into the paint or coating, becoming a permanent part of the material. They actively work to prevent microbes from colonising the surface. Tolsa has checked that the protection remains active for the lifetime of the coating and does not wash off or lose its effect after cleaning, enabling the replacement of traditional cleaning practices and good hygiene.
Due to their long-term surface protection, they provide a continuous defence against microbes that can cause stains, odours and discoloration. It helps keep surfaces cleaner and reduces the potential for microbial cross-contamination. In this way, the surfaces look better for longer by preventing unsightly mould and mildew growth, which is especially useful in humid environments like bathrooms, contributing to longer product life by preventing material degradation caused by microorganisms.
Adins Protection additives are used in many different applications, such as: residential, kitchens, bathrooms and high-touch surfaces like doors and light switches; healthcare, medical devices, sanitary facilities and hospital rooms; commercial and industrial, food processing areas, air conditioning systems and construction materials; and consumer goods, packaging, textiles and furniture.
Performance-driven, regulation-ready
To demonstrate their activity, ADINS Protection additives were introduced in coatings formulations achieving an adequate sample preservation versus outdoor bacteria( E. Coli and P. Aureginosa) and fungi( A. Niger, P. Funiculosum and A. Pullulan) according to the ASTM D2574-16 standard( Resistance of emulsion paints in the container to attack by microorganisms)
They showed a microbial death higher than 99 % versus bacteria like E. Coli and S. Aureus according to the ISO 22196( Measurement of antibacterial activity on plastics and other nonporous surfaces). C. Cladosporioides and A. Alternata) and indoor fungi( A. Versicolor and A. Niger) was evaluated according to the dry-film method UNE-EN 15457( Determination of the efficiency of film preservatives in a coating against fungi).
The versatility of Adins Protection means it can be used across water and solvent-based paints, powder coatings, speciality inks, general and decorative coatings, varnishes and industrial building materials and plastics. It can be easily incorporated into existing production lines, enhancing thermal stability and ensuring performance across the full pH range. Moreover, it can be applied in varnishes, expanding its use in highvalue coating systems.
Because less active substance content is required in the final formulation, Adins Protection offers a reduction in environmental impact while maintaining exceptional efficacy. Its controlled release mechanism via encapsulation translates into prolonged protection, before and after application. In a market where regulatory compliance, consumer safety and sustainability are now non-negotiable, ADINS thus offers a timely and technologically superior alternative.
Outlook
The future of antimicrobial coatings is shaped by innovation and sustainability, with key trends including:
• Bio-based additives: Natural antimicrobials like essential oils, chitosan and plant extracts are gaining traction
• Smart coatings: Responsive materials that activate under specific conditions( e. g. humidity, light) offer targeted protection
• Nanotechnology: Nanoparticles such as nano-silver or copper provide high surface area and enhanced efficacy
• Digital integration: Coatings with embedded sensors for real-time monitoring of microbial contamination are under development
Antimicrobial additives in coatings represent a critical advance in surface protection, offering a multifaceted approach to hygiene, durability and safety. As industries strive for cleaner and more sustainable solutions, the integration of effective and compliant antimicrobial technologies will be essential. Continued research and innovation will drive the development of next-generation coatings that not only protect but also adapt to the evolving challenges of microbial resistance and environmental impact. ●
