French government supports decarbonisation

Syensqo and Ineos are both among the seven companies receiving grants from the French government as part of the Major Industrial Decarbonisation Projects Call for Proposals( Appel d’ Offres Grands Projets Industriels de Décarbonation). This is part of France 2030 investment plan.
Syensqo plans to invest about € 20 million at the Saint- Fons site near Lyon to install a large-capacity electric boiler to produce steam, replacing two natural gas boilers. This should lead to a 22,000 tonnes / year CO 2
-equivalent reduction in emissions when it is commissioned in 2029. A biomass boiler, using regionally sourced wood waste, is currently being installed.
These projects are part of Syensqo’ s global One Planet ambition, which aims to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42 % by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. The company says that this also supports the broader decarbonisation efforts by companies in the Vallée de la Chimie, through the‘ Declyc’ low-carbon industrial zone.
Saint-Fons( pictured) is entirely focused on speciality chemicals. Its main product is vanillin for the food, flavours
and fragrances sectors, which resumed operations last year in response to changing market conditions and growing demand in Europe. It also supplies markets in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, electronics and polymers.
Separately, government grants are part of the € 300 million investment Ineos is making to regenerate its plant at Lavera and cut CO 2 by 331,000 tonnes / year. Lavera’ s products go into many sectors, including pharmaceuticals, healthcare, aerospace, transport, clean energy, food packaging and defence.
Ineos said that these upgrades“ will make Lavera a profitable, lower-carbon facility with a clear pathway to net zero as electrification and carbon capture technologies mature”. They will also enable the cracker at the site to process more sustainable feedstocks from recycled plastics and biosourced materials.
