The fragrance industry is dynamic

and constantly evolving . Its foundation is a unique balance of art and science , which means that innovation and R & D are at its strategic centre . Over the years , the ever-changing legislative landscape , with differing approaches around the globe , has added layers of complexity but in some ways helps to drive creativity . The COVID-19 pandemic seemingly came out of nowhere , and it is easy to lose hope and dwell over the negative side effects of any event , especially when we are still counting the very real human cost . Yet in a very short space of time many businesses all over the globe have adapted and found new ways to work . Like many of the innovations we are seeing in the medical arena , the changes put in place would probably have taken many months , if not years , of planning to achieve under normal circumstances - and no doubt many other barriers would have presented themselves . However , in the face of extreme adversity , adaptation and change become readily achievable . The fragrance industry was not unique in its ability to adapt to online business and social distancing requirements , but it certainly has unique challenges . As well as financial implications , supply chain issues also present major problems to members of the International Fragrance Association ( IFRA ) in the UK . Brexit has already had an effect on supply agreements across the globe and COVID-19 has sent the world into a financial crisis , which may lead to increased nationalism in the short term . Governments adopting emergency measures may have a detrimental effect . Many believe that COVID-19 will create a world that is less open and therefore less prosperous , but is that really the case ? When we consider the positive outcomes it is a wholly different story .
A global response
The fragrance industry has reacted responsibly and pulled together globally . Whilst fine fragrance business has been negatively affected in the short term , the supply of disinfectants , sanitising and cleaning products has become enormously important . Many IFRA UK members and their
