Figure 3 – Summary of key considerations when choosing an LCA software
Advanced LCA software
Advanced software packages are targeted at those with prior LCA knowledge . These powerful software packages provide the basis for intricate and complex modelling , with features that allow for sophisticated analysis . Two of the marketleading advanced LCA packages are SimaPro and LCA for Experts ( formerly GaBi ), although Umberto and OpenLCA are also widely used for environmental modelling .
A SimaPro subscription comes with Ecoinvent , a database containing over 17,000 unique datasets , included . LCA for Experts has its own professional database included in the software licence fee with a number of extension datasets available for purchase . In addition , Sphera , the developer of the LCA for Experts software , has a ‘ data on demand ’ service where users can request the development of new process datasets .
There are several advantages to using these more advanced software tools . Firstly , they support in-depth modelling ( e . g . parameterisation , uncertainty analysis ) allowing for more precise results . They also come with a number of impact assessment methods preloaded for use ( e . g . ReCiPe , CML and Eco-Indicator ).
Another advantage is that users can tailor assessments to suit their unique circumstances by leveraging process and data customisation options . Lastly , advanced tools support scenario analysis – modelling that enables the user to explore ' what-if ' scenarios in order to optimise product design choices .
The extensive features of advanced software tools mean that there is often a steep learning curve , particularly for individuals new to LCA or those who do not have environmental or scientific backgrounds . The demands of manual data entry and the plethora of options available can be overwhelming , with subscription costs and time commitments often presenting significant barriers to entry for smaller organisations .
Therefore , organisations will need to consider the level of expertise required to use the software before making a purchase decision to get the maximum benefits . Furthermore , even with the use of verified ISO-compliant datasets , like the screening tools , the use of advanced software does not guarantee ISO-compliant reporting .
Role of LCA experts
When assessing the advantages and disadvantages of automated tools and advanced software , it is important to consider a third option : independent LCA consultants . These experts are highly skilled at examining and interpreting data and can offer supply chain insights that software tools often overlook .
LCA consultants have the knowledge and expertise to navigate complex methodological challenges : boundary system issues , data gaps and multifunctional processes . Only by working with independent experts can organisations take advantage of the nuanced perspective LCA experts provide . The reasons to consult an independent expert are to :
• Provide critical insights and context for LCA results , helping organisations to make informed decisions
• Translate technical findings into meaningful , actionable insights for decision-makers
• Achieve more credible results due to their independence from data providers and the product ( s ) being assessed
• Save time , resources and potential mishaps . While the services of LCA experts come at a cost , the investment often pays off when considering the steep learning curve associated with software proficiency , licensing fees and the informed decisions they empower
How to choose ?
Automatic screening tools have undoubtedly improved the accessibility of LCA to non-experts and the features of advanced
