CONTRACT & TOLL MANUFACTURING
For Briar, the introduction of the Leak Detection & Repair( LDAR) requirements have focused minds.“ We are actively implementing and trialling LDAR technology on site to further control and reduce fugitive emissions and volatile organic compounds,” explains Woods.“ In addition, we continue to invest in Fenton oxidation technology to minimise and treat effluent waste and are exploring new ways to further reduce VOC and environmental emissions across our operations.”
Products in McKLords’ portfolio
Says Vijayan:“ We have significantly expanded our portfolio of plantbased and sustainable formulations, enabling our customers to choose white-label products that align with both their own ESG objectives and our shared commitment to reducing environmental impact.
“ By investing in greener chemistry and developing solutions that minimise reliance on animalderived ingredients, we are not only supporting sustainable manufacturing practices but actively helping our partners future-proof their brands in a rapidly shifting marketplace.”
Legislative landscape
Much of that shift comes through the rush of legislation that CMOs have had to face. Warriner outlines just a few of the laws that are on his radar: Biocidal Products Regulations( BPR), packaging Extended Producer Responsibility, the UK Plastic Tax and REACH.
“ We are adapting in line with legislation to ensure we are compliant and cost-effective with our packaging solutions,” he explains.“ This means registering raw materials for BPR and REACH, and formulating along the guidelines for those products. Regarding plastics and packaging, we are using recyclable materials where possible and minimising waste.”
McKLord’ s Vijayan adds the Classification, Labelling & Packaging( CLP) regulation to the mix alongside the Detergents Regulation. These legislative requirements are driving rapid change in speciality cleaning chemicals by phasing out PFAS, mandating biodegradable surfactants and introducing new hazard classes for endocrine disruptors and persistent substances.
“ To comply, we have reformulated products in our range to be PFASfree, have greater than 95 % biodegradable formulations, invested in REACH-compliant digital systems and launched the fully compliant green range, ensuring seamless regulatory adherence and market access,” says Vijayan.

Get the job done
External pressures – whether it is inflation, labour shortages or adapting to new regulations – will continue to challenge businesses for the foreseeable future. CMOs in the field of speciality chemicals are finding that their expertise and innovation are helping their customers through a difficult time for the global economy. While no industry can be bullish in the face of such uncertainty, there is a confidence and positivity about how outsourcing can get the job done whatever the market conditions. ●
