a specific zone for each botanical origin . Indeed , we can clearly see that this method makes it possible to discriminate between the different botanical origins of vanillins , which is not possible with 13 C IRMS .
However , they rely on databases for which reference vanillin materials are crucial and some limitations remain . For instance , some blends can again have the same result as another origin , for example 50-50 lignin / eugenol blends that give ex-curcumin results .
Process authentication
As underlined in the regulation , not only the raw material , but also the process is crucial for EU natural flavouring compliance . Therefore , authentication must cover natural raw materials and include the whole industrial process to fully assess regulation compliance and ensure brand image transparency .
EU Regulation 1334 / 2008 Annex 2 describes which ‘ traditional processes ’ are authorised . Physical , enzymatic and microbiological processes are also authorised . However , it is important to point out that the entire process needs to meet the authorised processes in order to comply with the regulation .
For example , fermentation is described as a traditional process ; however , vanillin from eugenol obtained through isomerisation ( chemical process ) followed by a fermentation step is identified as ‘ eugenol sourced ’ but is recognised as non-natural according to the EU 1334 / 2008 .
This means that , even if only one step cannot be described as traditional , physical , enzymatic or microbiological EU naturality compliance cannot be claimed , creating a fraud from a legal perspective by misleading the consumer ( Article 4b ).
In addition , when it comes to process , it is essential to consider what is feasible on an industrial scale and not just a process based on patents . A process may work at the laboratory level but be difficult to scale up cost-effectively to an industrial level .
It is the responsibility of natural vanillin users to request process information , such as on-site audits , raw material flow charts , traceability and transparency from suppliers to be compliant with the authorised processes . All players along the value chain need to be vigilant according to all these criteria .
Authentication : A key lever for sustainable business
As consumers become more aware of the impact of their purchasing decisions on their health and the environment , they demand greater transparency from brands . Supply chain traceability enables them to assess the quality , environmental and social impact , and ensure the safety of products they consume .
Thus , brands can demonstrate their commitment to sustainable practices by providing greater transparency in their supply chains , which can lead to greater trust and loyalty from consumers . The risk of losing consumer confidence and even destroying hard-earned consumer loyalty , highlights the importance of effective regulation conformity and the potential consequences of taking shortcuts .
The EU Flavouring Regulation lists specific requirements for the use of the term ‘ natural ’. Authentication analyses are critical to ensure compliance with the above regulation . However , a vanillin , authenticated as derived from a natural raw material and based on a fermentation process is not automatically synonymous with EU compliance , as some other steps may exist that can impact the natural status . It is therefore mandatory to verify that the industrial process complies with EU natural flavouring regulations to ensure a chosen natural vanillin fully complies with regulations .
Syensqo ’ s Rhovanil ** Natural is a natural vanillin range that can be labelled as natural flavour according to EU and US natural flavouring substance regulations . Made from non-GMO raw materials , Rhovanil Natural is obtained by fermentation of ferulic acid , a natural molecule found in rice bran oil . Rhovanil Natural is a versatile and key ingredient considered as a market reference by food developers . ●
