Cranberry Country Crier October 2013 Page 7 Festival includes Fitness Weekend activities Fun run and walk planned on Saturday Cranberry Fest weekend in Eagle River has been celebrated the first weekend of October for more than 30 years. This fall, people can help commemorate the 34th anniversary of this festival and participate in the Cranberry Fest and Fitness Weekend as visitors run and walk to fight this country’s greatest killers — heart disease and stroke. The 2013 fitness events will be Saturday, Oct. 5, at Vilas County Fairgrounds, located on Highway 70 West in Eagle River. All proceeds from the fitness events will benefit services and equipment for Ministry Eagle River Memorial Hospital (MERMH). “Every year we are impressed by the generosity of our community to support this incredible event,” said Ministry Howard Young Health Care Director of Patient Care Services Laura Magstadt. “The donations to our hospital are greatly appreciated and will certainly go toward quality patient care at our facility.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 400,000 to 460,000 people die each year of heart disease in an emer- gency department or before reaching a hospital, which accounts for more than 60% of all cardiac deaths. Healthy lifestyle changes can help prevent those deaths. In Vilas County, the Public Health Departmentsponsored Community Health Improvement Plan has identified that physical inactivity is one of the country’s greatest health risks. “We are very passionate about promoting healthy lifestyles at Ministry Eagle River Memorial Hospital,” said Peggy Lambert, president of Partners-Auxiliary Ministry Eagle River Memorial Hospital. “Cranberry Fitness Weekend gives us the opportunity to increase public awareness of the benefits of physical activity.” There are numerous benefits to introducing a healthy lifestyle into your daily routine, including improved blood circulation, weight control, prevention and management of high blood pressure, prevention of bone loss, increased energy level and stress management.
