When Jared and Stephanie Buckley found out that their first born child would have Down syndrome, their world began to change.
In addition to Down syndrome their unborn child was also diagnosed with having an AVSD, (Atrioventricular Septal Defect) which would require open-heart surgery soon after birth. They were told that their child would have a 60% chance of survival.
While Stephanie was still pregnant, the Buckley's spent extravagant hours researching anything from Down syndrome to heart defects. They learned quickly to not believe everything they read on the internet because some information was not concrete, but conditional.
It wasn’t long until they found out that all the statistics out there meant nothing more than a number.
According to statistics, Stephanie who was 28 at the time had a 1 in 1,100 chance of having a child with Down syndrome.
