Radon gas is considered a pollutant. It is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can cause lung cancer when inhaled in large quantities over time 123. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has classified radon as a Class A carcinogen, which means it is known to cause cancer in humans 1. Radon is odorless, colorless, and tasteless, so it is difficult to detect without specialized equipment. The EPA recommends testing your home for radon levels and taking action if the levels are high 1.
Historically I'm not a big poster but wanted to share my excitement about starting a new year in one of my volunteer roles. I am lucky enough to lead a Taskforce that pushes for new policies to protect people from deadly radioactive radon. Its a group of volunteers from health and trade groups including the Amer. Lung Assoc. Last year, we helped obtain a new Illinois law that protects renters through radon awareness and options. I never imagined I'd be involved with creating laws, yet here I am. It's a great group of people and might be the most rewarding work I have ever done. Thanks to Senator Laura Ellman and Representative Ann Williams. Below is part of our team with Rep. WIlliams,
last spring. We are off to push our next bill. I will keep
you informed.
