Glenda Nugent

We are excited about the feature article about poetry in this edition of The Missouri Reader (pg. 6). Using the information from this article, and the information from our Special Poetry Issue from Winter of 2019 our readers can find literally hundreds of ideas about how to use poetry. That should come in very handy during April, which is national poetry month. We hope you enjoy doing all theses activities with your students. We want to give special thanks to David Harrison and his fellow poets for all their hard work on both projects.

You will also find great ideas to motivate you and enhance your teaching practices in the articles by Debbie Diller, Evan Robb, Kelly Byrd and our other contributing authors.

If you would like to become a contributing author, please see the submission guidelines on the last page of this issue.

Happy National Poetry Month!

Sam Bommarito

This edition of The Missouri Reader represents different views of the Science or Reading (SOR).  Some of the articles represent very strong views for one side or the other and do not necessarily represent the views of the Missouri Literacy Association (MLA) or the International Literacy Association (ILA).  Our goal is that the various articles result in discussions that move us forward in discussing the value of doing what works for EACH student.

The International Literacy Association (ILA) defines SOR as “a corpus of objective investigation and accumulation of reliable evidence about how humans learn to read and how reading should be taught.”  ILA has published two special issues of Reading Research Quarterly that focus on deepening the understanding of phonics and expanding the concept of SOR. Dr. Sam expands on this in his article in this issue. That article can be found on page six.

While Glenda will be moving from the position of co-editor of The Missouri Reader, she will be continuing as ILA Coordinator for the Missouri Literacy Association.  Dr. Sam will continue as co-editor and will be working with Dr. Nermin Vehabovic and Lydia Harold from the University of Missouri at St. Louis to publish future issues. Please support your new editorial team by reading, reviewing, and writing!
