Transport for London is doing a consultation on a new Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) for London. Please join us in asking TFL to widen the ULEZ to cover all of London, and to bring it in before the end of his tenure in 2020. You can complete the consultation at www.consultations.tfl.gov.uk
WHY IT AFFECTS LONDON FAMILIES
It’s estimated that around 9000 premature deaths every year in London are caused by air pollution.
Brixton Road in Lambeth is one of the most polluted roads in London, and currently has nitrogen dioxide levels more than twice the legal EU limit.
Brixton’s levels of nitrogen dioxide are currently around 97ug/m3, the legal limit is 40ug/m3
Brixton was the first place in the
country to break EU limits for the hourly mean of nitrogen dioxide in 2017, just FIVE days into the year.
Although the politicians are trying to tell us that London’s air quality is getting better, we simply find it unacceptable that we are forced to accept our children breathing in such dangerous chemicals.
ABOUT MUMS FOR LUNGS
The arrival of a new baby is often a time when we begin to think much more deeply about the world around us. For many of us at Mums for Lungs it was a moment when our vague fears about air pollution in London crystallised. From being told to cut down on cycling during pregnancy to having our tiny babies and toddlers diagnosed with asthma, we have all become much more aware of the dangers of poor quality air in our city. There’s something very powerful about seeing your baby’s pushchair lined up at a pedestrian crossing with trucks and buses chugging out exhaust fumes at the same level as their faces. Mums For Lungs started as a weekly NCT meet up and quickly became a forum to do something about the local pollution level.
