Pregnancy & Birth

Here are our top tips to make travelling when pregnant as easy and comfortable as possible

Travelling when Pregnant

Choose your destination carefully

Only you know exactly how your pregnancy is affecting you and your body, so think about what you will be able to deal with in terms of length of journey. Many women find long haul flights very uncomfortable when pregnant and prefer to stick to shorter flights.

Stretch your legs

No matter what form of transport you take, be sure to stretch your legs regularly. Pregnant women are more prone to developing blood clots, so this is especially important on flights. While you are stitting down you can circle your ankles and clench and unclench your toes to keep your blood flowing to your feet.

Always choose comfort!

Whether it be clohtes or mode of transport, always chose the comfortable option. Pack your most comfortable shoes as your feet may swell in the heat or on the plane. And whilst you might have thought sleeping in a bunk in a hostel was a great idea before being pregnant, your pregnant body will appreciate a comfortable and quiet place to sleep.

Pack your maternity notes

Regardless of how far along you are in your pregnancy, always take your maternity notes with you. You never know when you might have to go to the doctors, and having all the information to hand will almost certainly be helpful. Just be sure to bring them home, as your midwife won't be happy if you lose them!

Enjoy the attention

If you have a baby bump already, you'll probably have noticed that people seem to pay you more attention. We say make the most of people's interest and kindness and accept offers of seats on buses or help with bags. After all, growing a human being is tiring and admirable work!

Check airline regulations

Some airlines have different regulations about travelling when pregnant. Commonly, if you are 28 weeks or more pregnant, they may ask for a letter from your doctor or midwife confirming you are safe to travel. Check this out before travelling to avoid any last minute panic.

Eat wisely

Pack healthy snacks, and consider taking some dried fruit, as we all know that a lack of fibre and pregnancy are not a good combination! Be careful of what you eat, especially if travelling abroad. Make sure fruit and veg are washed and that meat is well cooked. If you aren't sure if the water is safe, drink bottled water.
