What are some foods that are good to start weaning with?

There is no set one best food to start on, but we like using simple, single vegetables or fruit such as sweet potato, butternut squash, avocado, broccoli, apple, pear or banana.

What are some foods to avoid when starting weaning?

There are a few foods to watch out when your baby is under one:

·Salt: Avoid giving your baby added salt as it isn’t good for their kidneys. Watch out for stock or gravy as these can be high in salt.

· Sugar: Your baby also doesn’t need sugar. Avoiding sugary snacks and drinks such as fruit juice can help to prevent tooth decay.

· Honey: It is advised not to give honey to infants under one due to the small risk of honey containing a bacteria that can lead to infant botulism.

·Whole nuts: Should not be given to children under five as they can choke on them. However, long as there's no history of food allergies or other allergies in your family, you can give  your baby nuts and seeds, including peanuts, once they're six months old. Try them crushed or in a nut or seed butter.

·Low Fat foods: Use full fat milk, yoghurt and cheese rather than low-fat varieties. Fat is an important source of calories and some vitamins.
