Meet the Volunteer

Your Local NCT

Name: Katy Turner

Role: Magazine Co-editor

Lives in: Clapham

Mummy to: Felix (8 months)

How was childbirth for you?

The arrival itself was a little bit of a surprise! Felix was three weeks early, having been induced after my waters broke. But overall, and thanks to a timely epidural, and speedy delivery, I think I got off lightly. That said, I then spent five days in hospital, which was quite stressful.

What were the best and worst things about being pregnant?

One of the best things was that the tougher children at the school where I was teaching suddenly became especially nice to me, which was great. As for the worst thing, there was one day last summer where the temperature peaked at 36*, which was excruciatingly uncomfortable. My feet and hands swelled up and were utterly colossal, and didn’t really recover until after I gave birth.

How has having children changed your philosophy of life?

Having been someone who likes to be in complete control, I’m learning not to sweat the small things. If I did, I’d be sweating constantly, which would not be pleasant. Easier said than done, though.

What have you found the most rewarding about motherhood?

I just love spending time with Felix. He’s excellent. I don’t know what else to say, really.

What have you found to be the greatest challenge in being a parent?

Once you’ve surmounted one challenge, another one pops up in it’s place. I feel like I’m never quite on top of anything, whether that is having Felix nap sufficiently, or vacuuming the flat.

What encouraged you to volunteer for your NCT role?

I wanted something to keep me occupied ‐ as if a newborn wasn’t enough. I need to be busy (even if, as per the previous question, I’m never quite on top of anything).

What would you say to someone thinking of volunteering?

Definitely do it! It’s a great way to meet people, and feel like you’re involved in something bigger.

What is your ideal way to spend a child-free afternoon, or evening?

Some form of pampering ‐ a massage and manicure, perhaps. And then a nice meal out with my husband ‐ one where I don’t sit waiting for the baby to wake up.
