What are the benefits of visiting a chiropractor during pregnancy?
Chiropractic care can be a real saviour during pregnancy, not only to relieve the aches and pains but also to ensure that the pelvis is functioning correctly and in good alignment to help to enable a growing baby to get in to the desired position and sit comfortably within the womb. Vital and dramatic changes take place in the body throughout the nine months and these changes can put a huge amount of strain on a mother’s joints and the supporting muscles. Gentle chiropractic care helps to achieve balance in the body, ensure that the joints are functioning well and that the muscles aren’t having to work overtime. Whilst as chiropractors we can’t stop the changes that take place or the hormones that create instability, we can support the body through the process and enable it to remain as strong as possible ready for labour.

As a trained Doula and with a large patient base of pregnant mothers I can appreciate how visiting a chiropractor whilst pregnant can be a bit daunting. I am certified in the Webster technique (a very gentle technique often used in pregnancy) and all the treatments really are very gentle. Many patients feedback that they do feel better afterwards and it’s a great feeling knowing we have helped a mummy to be.
Polly Hand, Pregnancy & Paediatrics Chiropractor and Birth Doula from Chiropractic By Hand, answers all your questions about seeing a chiropractor.
Is it worthwhile visiting a chiropractor as a new mum?
Chiropractic postnatal care will aim to restore your pelvic balance with adjustments, exercises and stretches similar to those used in prenatal care. Positions during feeding or simply carrying your little one can also put new pressures on your back and shoulders. The transition a woman’s body goes through postnatally is often unrecognised, but after giving birth and for weeks (make that months!) afterwards her body will be undergoing a huge amount of change as it recovers from the pregnancy and labour. It really is a good idea to take care of yourself and check your pelvis alignment and stability.

We take a holistic approach to all of our patients, taking their entire physical, emotional and social wellbeing into account when we treat them. Aside from the physical transitions, the period with a new-born can be extremely emotional for women so receiving physical relief from discomfort in a caring and supportive environment is extremely important.
