Loops, Swoops & Spins: MATHS AND SCIENCE THRILLS AT LEGOLAND Have you ever been to a theme park and wondered about how the amazing rides work? At Legoland, there are brilliant examples of maths and science in action – in fact, they are everywhere you go! Important bits of science such as acceleration, volume and force actually effect how the rides work in terms of speed and distance… all in an enjoyable, safe way too! Water is really important for movement at Legoland and is used on rides such as rapids and log flumes. The word “rapids” normally means the part of a river where it’s running quickly down a slope, bumping over rocks. The Vikings’ River Splash is a rapids ride, where the water rushes along at varied speeds to take would-be 16 SPARK fearless Viking adventurers through a torrential 400 metre “river”, braving the rapid flows to recreate the daring sea voyages from centuries ago. To do this, huge pumps move the water in the right direction. A normal bottle of water holds about half a litre of water. Legoland’s pumps move 5,000 litres every second!
