STUDENT ADVISORY BOARDS:
VOICES ENHANCING THE STUDENT
EXPERIENCE
In 2024 – 25, the Office of Intercultural Relations( OIR) strengthened the student experience through four Student Advisory Boards. These boards created a platform for student leaders to share perspectives, deepen intercultural understanding, and provide recommendations that informed programs, services, and the overall campus environment.
OIR and university conversations. Along the way, board members practiced skills aligned with the NACE Career Readiness Competencies as well as intercultural competence. Students also reported that their involvement strengthened their sense of belonging and purpose. As one board member reflected,“ Being part of the advisory board helped me grow as a leader and reminded me that my voice matters, not just for myself but for other students too.”
What’ s Next?
Building on the success of last academic year, OIR observed that many discussions and recommendations from the four advisory groups often aligned. Students also showed strong synergy when meeting together, exchanging ideas, and learning across communities. To continue
The impact was significant. A total of 33 student leaders participated, contributing more than 880 hours through meetings, outreach, and leadership activities. Advisory board members connected with 31 departments and 15 student organizations, building bridges between students and campus departments. Their insight added valuable perspective to
this momentum, the four student advisory boards have transitioned into the Monarch Intercultural Student Advisory Board( MISAB) this year. MISAB serves as a unified structure that brings student voices into one collaborative advisory board while also creating opportunities for members to focus on key areas through committees co-advised by the OIR staff.
