A DIFFERENT RACE THIS YEAR
Message of welcome from Race Director Brad Glasspoole
Take Two ... The SPAR GRAND PRIX Durban is a reboot of the postponed 27 June event , which was called off just two days before race day due to the effects of South Africa ’ s third COVID-19 wave . This has given our teams time to check out the race plans on both the Pietermaritzburg and Cape Town legs of the SPAR Grand Prix Series and iron out a few kinks .
A positive from the pandemic is the complete rethink of the traditional running of events . With smaller numbers on lap courses , we have seen some of the most exciting races in recent times . The incredible times we experienced in Pietermaritzburg and the 10km age category South African record in Cape Town point towards some exciting times on the sea-level course along Durban ’ s famous beachfront .
Although we are looking at a reduction to Level 2 soon , we hope , the
National Regulations applicable on the day of the event will be strictly applied , so masks must be worn at all times , except for athletes during the race . Unfortunately , as per current National Regulations , no spectators will be allowed at the event venue and on course , but the race will be broadcast on live streaming and runners can be tracked live using the SPORTSPLITS app .
Race officials will be kept to a minimum and the organisers have continued working closely with the South African Police Services , Durban Metro Police and Durban Disaster Management officials to ensure that the event is as safe as possible in the current situation .
