REFLECTION .

REFLECTION .

Our proposal for a new symbolic system of representation for contemporary art in Budapest began with the idea that the current system is outdated and difficult to follow . As shown through our research , it is very rare that we are able to work out what is inside of a gallery without going to that individual gallery ’ s website or venturing inside the gallery itself .
If a system like ours were to be employed , visitors to Budapest would be able to access the wealth of conventional and alternative art spaces on offer , without having do to hours of their own research beforehand .
Due to the comparatively detailed nature of our system of representation it is unrealistic to hope that one-day symbols like this might be added to general , tourist type maps . The symbols would lose clarity if printed too small and the information we are presenting may not be relevant or interesting to everyone who visits Budapest .
However , were this project developed even further , we feel that our symbols would work excellently if printed as part of a zine , such as the ‘ You Are Not a Tourist ’ map , or other publications which are aimed more specifically at those with an interest in the contemporary art scene of Budapest .
We could compose a key of our symbols and approach publications such as ‘ index-link ’ and distribute our symbolic system alongside these kinds of publications .
Our project also has potential to work well online . If we were to utilize online maps , where users can zoom in and zoom out , we would be able to display our symbols next to the location of the venue on the map . This would allow users to get a quick and concise overview of the contents of the gallery , and help visitors to plan which galleries and venues they might like to visit .
This project has allowed us to compare the way that symbols are used in relation to contemporary art in Europe and further afield in Mexico . The research has been eye opening and we feel that we have come up with the beginnings of a new system that if pushed further could have real potential .
