What we have done .
The adverts of club nights and places to visit that are targeted at Erasmus students are usually located in the centre , owned by big companies , and often focused on hedonistic blow-out parties .
We wanted to create some online media that drew attention to those places ‘ under the surface ’ of the usual tourism and student network . Independent places that have a lot to offer - day and night , food and drink , work and party . We found some Erasmus party adverts on Facebook and used the same shape to create our own simple flyers .
We chose to create a map - a colourful outline of part of the 8th district , with 6 selected places of interest : Lumen , Csiga , Macska , Auróra , Hinatló , and Muszi . The simplicity hopefully provides a clear location of the places . If we were to fully realize this project we would add more places to the map . We also put all the writing for the spaces ( as shown above ) to advertise and describe the history of the spaces as well as providing a bit of background on the area , and why it is important for people to visit this area . We hand drew our own map as we wanted it to be unique to us and to fit our leaflet style and colours . The map is quite simplified but alongside the descriptions it becomes clearer how to find the spaces as some are quite tucked away .
We have used various captions across our designs including : ‘ Alternative Map of Budapest ’, ‘ You Are Not a Tourist ’, ‘ Discover the 8th District ’ , to reiterate the message to students and other new comers - that they don ’ t have to accept the first places that they are offered . There are different , more interesting places - that will give them a more authentic experience of Budapest . At the same time they will be putting their presence and money into independent , community-focused spaces , rather than big corporations in the centre .
The website was made as a resource for newcomers - on the first page it has a picture , short bio , and a link to the Facebook page , of each of the six selected places . We have used the spaces logos across the designs - which will hopefully serve as a visual reminder - and people will instantly be able to recognise if they are out and about in the city . The website also includes an ‘ About ’ page , and a page with the ‘ Alternative ’ map - linking the places to their location . Unfortunately creating a free website meant that we do not have a proper domain name - if we were to fully realise this project - we would purchase one , so it could be easily found and used as a resource .
