PH $2500-3500 Six page handwritten letter from British soldier Charles G. ‘Chinese’ Gordon to a Mr. Button, from Jerusalem, dated May 30, 1883. He mentions Coco de Mer from visiting the Seychelles, the location where Noah built the Ark, visiting the Dead Sea and a new discovery of the location of Skull Hill, site of the Crucifixion. Typewritten full text included. (University Archives LOA). 509 An official government document about military service (9½”x14½”), dated February 26, 1928. Signed boldly on the back in fountain pen by Benito Mussolini and King Vittorio Emanuele III. Document with docketing notations. Diagonal fold at the bottom and with minor left edge faults where the sheet was removed from its original book. 516 Handwritten signed letter, simply ‘Rothschild’, two pages, 4¼”x7", front & verso. Datelined 148 Piccadilly (London), July 3, 1889, written to ‘Suffolk’ (Henry Howard, 17th Earl of Suffolk), asking if he wishes to write about horse racing for the ‘New Review’. Fine condition. PH $3500 Unique handpainted cover from India, signed in pen by last English Governor of India, LORD MOUNTBATTEN, bearing complete Silver Jubilee set of 7 stamps, canceled with Delhi ’13 DEC 35' cds and registration label. Beautiful handpainted multicolored ‘Coat of Arms & Crown’ in center. Addressed to ‘J.T. Dye/841 West 177 St/New York City’ (possibly related to his New York World’s Fair Exhibition). Fantastic cover, makes for a tremendous showpiece. Very fine. – RUSSIAN – 517 518 Document signed ‘La Comtesse du Barry’, written in French on plain paper, 6.3"x3½”, dated September 14, 1779, appears to be in the countess’ hand. The document written in clear dark ink, and seems to be a request for payment. She would eventually wind up on the guillotine. A fabulous document. PH $400-600 Report and Draft Decree, produced during the Reign of Terror, by Bertrand Barere of the Committee of Public Safety, one of the most feared of all revolutionaries. Booklet is 32 pages, measures 5½”x8½”, in French, dated 13 Pluviose 1794. Bound with string, uncut, except for first two pages. Tear on cover page professionally mended. PH $2000-3000 Official document written in Italian, addressed to the President of Bolivia, boldly signed at bottom by new king ‘Vittorio Emanuele’. Official announcement on the death of King Umberto I, who was assassinated by an anarchist on July 29, 1900 in Monza. Minor edge wear, signature very fine. A translation is provided. (University Archives LOA). 520 /D 1904 ANNOUNCMENT OF DEATH OF QUEEN ISABEL II SIGNED BY KING ALFONSO .......................... PH $1500-2000 Official government announcement of the death of Queen Isabel II of Spain, grandmother to young King Alphonso XIII. King signed document as ‘Alfonso’ in black, the black border form document is addressed to the President of Bolivia. Minor faults from previous binding, fine to very fine. (University Archives LOA). PH $700-900 Decorative and extremely rare original broadside concerning taxes and duties for the export of merchandise from Spain to America. Printed broadside, one page, 16"x24", Lima, Peru, February 11, 1783. Likely signed by or on behalf of a local magistrate. The proclamation reads in part: ‘...Don Jorge Escobedo y Alarcon, Knight of Royal and distinguished order of Carlos III, from Council of his majesty in the Royal and Supreme of Indias, General Visitor of Justice Courts and Royal Public Funds of this Kingdom, General Superintendent of them, Intendent of Army, and subdelegate of tobacco rent...Wishing the King of our Lord to foment the commerce and obtain the greater lightening of his vassals, I command the following thing...’ Tape repair on verso at center fold, piece of left margin missing not affecting legibility, otherwise very good condition. PH $700-900 Partially printed document from the Bank of France, dated Thermidor 13, year 10 (August 1, 1802). ‘The Bank of National Treasury Neuve-St. Augustin St, No. 738, To Citizen Pichon,’ French representative to the United Sates at Philadelphia. ‘It is our pleasure to inform you, Citizen Pl, that starting on the first Prairial (May 21 1802), we will be in charge, exclusively, of all the different departments of the National Treasury’ and ‘You will find hereafter samples of our signatures...we direct you to honor only the aforementioned signatures.’ On the back are seven handwritten signatures of bank officials. Document from orphanage teacher asking permission for 28-day vacation for personal matters. Maria responds writing ‘I allow it. Maria.’ – FRENCH – 511 1931 MUSSOLINI SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH ........
