Small archive of 4 long family letters (multi-page folded letters) written 1839-44 to Charles Burnham, manager of Hawaii’s first sugar plantation, mailed from Tolland, CT, to Kauai, Sandwich Islands. Letters, two from his mother and one each from sisters Mary and Emeline, discuss everything from religion, ‘I have lately read in the paper that the Roman Catholics are building a Chapel in Honolulu, which news I am very sorry to hear... ...I have thought that if you ever arrived there your hearts would be rejoiced in view of what God had done for the poor heathen...’, to local and national news to news of the death of one of his sisters (Emeline). There is much to be explored. Charles Burnham and his wife arrived in Hawaii April 27, 1839, and took over the operation May 6. Burnham remained as plantation manager for five years. Each letter has MS ‘Tolland’ marking, no receiving marks. Some small faults.
