1946 HARRY & BESS TRUMAN SIGNED
CHRISTMAS PHOTO ........................................... PH $200-300
Typed Letter, one page (8"x10½”) on United States Senate
letterhead, May 21, 1954. Not signed. Letter to Charles J.
Lewin, Editor, ‘The Standard-Times,’ New Bedford, Mass.,
two file holes in upper blank margin. Kennedy rejects letter
for unknown reasons. Partial text follows: ‘I do not think that
anyone reasonably could say that the Congress was niggardly
in appropriating this $91 million when it is noted that such a
program would be several millions more than the air mail and
subsidy payments in 1948 which was the first year when a
Congressional Committee advocated a reform of the air mail
subsidy program. You have performed a very fine public service
in bringing this expensive item to the attention of the taxpayers
who after all are the ones who have to pay the bill.’ Letter was
never signed or mailed. There are no mailing folds. Sen.
Kennedy penned an enormous ‘No’ on the text, with long
underline. Full transcript and University archives accompany
this interesting lot. Very fine.
Official B&W (8"x10") photo of President Harry Truman and
wife Bess Truman on the stairs of the presidential plane sent
to friends and colleagues for Christmas of 1946 (unsigned
Christmas card included). A very attractive photo with the
presidential couple in characteristic pose. Some corner creases
that do not affect the photo, otherwise fine.
