Our main activities for the past year have been the Navratri and the Diwali Party . The Navratri Ras Garbas were held over four nights in comparison to the past , where it was celebrated over the full nine days in line with public demand . Similarly , the format of the Diwali Show has been changed too in order to provide a social gathering and to exchange greetings during the Diwali festivity period .
However , as we continue to observe and hear from friends and colleagues that institutions like our Samaj are experiencing change , and change at a pace faster than we have ever known . With so much exposure and attraction of social media and communication , we find it is getting increasingly difficult for young families to allocate a small part of their time to participate in Samaj and its social and cultural activities . This clearly introduces new challenges and impacts what we can do .

A number of suggestions and options are possible and they require time and patience . It is difficult to change people ’ s thoughts , however if we can find a magic formula which provides learning and which directly benefits individuals ( be it in education , career or culture ), it may help us to turn the corner . Looking for a modern and smarter way to promote Samaj activities using a combination of leaflets , emails and social media such as WhatsApp and Twitter , where possible , are also another means to achieve participation . It would definitely encourage the few who willingly give their time and effort for Samaj Sewa .
I am sure there are many members who will say they have learnt many many skills from Samaj . For example planning a Samaj event requires all the skills for those seeking a career in Event Management . A Treasurer role provides hands on experience to those seeking a career in Finance , and so on .
We are all , as parents and as Samaj members , are mindful that the modern generation is well integrated into a multicultural society and we have a challenging time ahead to try and promote our rich culture . Perhaps the time is right to adapt to being more cohesive and work with the wider Hindu Communities .
