B R ANCH REPORT
Preston
Namaste 2015 is a landmark year for Preston as it marks our 40th
anniversary. During this time the branch has experienced many changes
and developments, yet maintained the core values of the Shree
Prajapati Association.
From a cultural aspect, the committee has strived to acknowledge key
festivals, namely Navratri and Diwali. Since their introduction in 2000 our
annual Shradhdh Bhajans and New Year Gathering have also become
popular events.
As we face the future,
we look to find ways and means of
developing the Samaj so that it will
cater for both our current members
and future generations.
The annual HQ Sports day, Volunteer’s Appreciation Day and former weekly
sports have had an important role in maintaining the social aspect of Samaj.
In the 80’s and early 90’s our past committees organised various day trips.
This has recently been rekindled on a grander scale by Natubhai Tailor and
Khushalbhai Kumar who have organised very successful trips to various
worldwide destinations.
A key function of the Samaj has been to support our members during difficult
times, particularly during bereavement. With this in mind, the committee
provides support to family members by assisting with any subsequent tasks.
We also organise a Shaanti Paath on behalf of our branch members.
“A key function of the Samaj has been to
support our members during difficult times...”
Over the years our members have participated and supported
many charitable causes locally and internationally. A charity Bhajan event
was introduced to support HQ’s annual nominated charity. Many of our
members also volunteered in the Rotary Eye Camps organised by SPA (UK).
Throughout our history, our members have shown great community
spirit which has proven to be our strength. Despite this, the branch has
experienced a decline in participation, both from the ‘middle age’ and
younger generation. This is a reflection on how our lifestyles and priorities
have changed compared to that of our parents and grandparents. In the
70s and 80s the Samaj provided an important platform for our cultural
activities and maintaining our heritage, whilst providing a ‘familiar’ social
environment. As we have further integrated into society our outlook has
changed. Increasing interest and education has encouraged participation
in a wider scope of activities outside of Samaj. Combined with changes
to work patterns and responsibilities, our schedules have become tighter,
reducing the level of commitment we can offer to Samaj activities. This has
resulted in core participation predominantly by Seniors.
On behalf of SPA (UK)
Preston we would like
to wish everyone a
Happy Diwali and a
prosperous New Year.
Jai Shree Krishna
