The fibroblast cells, which are the cells that make collagen and elastin, migrate to the injured site and produce and deposit new extra cellular matrix. The new matrix cross-links and organizes itself and, over time, new collagen will:
• fill in any depressed scars, fine lines and wrinkles that are present.
• break down and reorganize any scar tissue.
• tighten and tone the skin.
• reduce the signs of aging.
Are there possible side effects?
Although medical skin needling has been demonstrated to be safe and effective, some of the following may be noticed:
• Possible pinkness of the skin, which should subside by morning.
• Slight skin swelling initially.
• A possible retinoid reaction (redness, flaking, burning or stinging), due to the increase in vitamin A penetration. This is not harmful, just unpleasant. It does not indicate an allergy to your product and subsides quickly once the vitamin A is reduced.
If skin irritation results, delay use of the dermal roller for a week or until the skin feels comfortable. Do not use a dermal roller on active acne, active rosacea, open wounds, infected areas, eczema, severe solar keratosis, skin cancer, raised moles or warts. If you are unsure about using your skincare product in conjunction with the dermal roller or for any other concerns, always consult a skincare professional.
Personal use dermal rollers enter the mainstream
Proper care and cleaning of the dermal roller is crucial to maintain its safety and effectiveness. Denture tablets (in water) may be used to clean the dermal roller. Denture tablets(i.e. Efferdent) contain enzyme cleansers which remove oils as well as reduce bacteria. In a plastic cup with a cotton pad placed at the bottom, use a half of a denture tablet mixed with water, gently insert your roller and allow it to soak for 15-30 minutes.
The dermal roller can also be cleaned with rubbing alcohol:
1. Open the cleaning tray and place a white pad in the larger half of the tray.
2. Fill the cleaning tray and rubbing alcohol and roll the roller into the pad with medium pressure.
3. Leave the roller in the rubbing alcohol for about 15-minutes – ensure the roller drum is constantly wet with the alcohol.
4. Gently use your brush to clean away any skin cells.
5. After cleaning, gently rinse with tap water and return the roller to the protective case
6. Allow it to air-dry.
7. Replace the case lid until the next use.
Consult a pharmacist or astherician for the best advice for a sterilization solution. Also, avoid dropping or resting your roller on a hard service - it will bend the needles and your roller will no longer be safe to use. Most important, never share your roller with another person; it’s a personal use item.
