Be well, and I'll see you next issue,
I look at my daughters who are ages 15 and 13 and ask myself; do they know anything about skincare? First and foremost, both are redheads. So I am an over-the- top crazy mother bear about applying sunscreen. I tell them “In my day everyone was sun tanning and the skin colours of red and brown were in back then. People used to put iodine in their baby oil to get a darker tan.” They just look at me like I am a two-headed mule – plus they have no idea what iodine is either. Remember they are at the ages of ‘they know everything and their mother is stupid.'
As you know I am privy to trying new products, so I try to teach them about clean skin and being good to your skin at their young age and it will pay off later in life. Again, I get that blank stare. So I have a new method and I should be selling videos for this one.
I tell them that to prevent bad skin like acne, pimples, blackheads, scars and redness they need to practice good skincare and then I phrase it in this way; “What person is going to ask either of them to a party or out if they have skin that looks like Nanny McPhee?" I suddenly get their attention. So now I leave things in their bathroom, like creams and lotions, and ask them to read the instructions try it and give their feedback if they like it or it works. I also do a home facial routine once in a while and they seem to like the attention and one-on-one time with me – so far, but that could change anytime. I also point out those people who were dedicated sun tanners – and look at them now! That gives them a reality check. My most famous line I still love and throw at them whenever I can is: “Don‘t think that can’t happen to you!”
My mother never talked to me about skincare. Back in my day it involved cleaning with Noxzema, putting Nivea cream or hand lotion on my face, and Vaseline on my lips! Now there is a picture! Thankfully we have come a long way but I still miss that Noxzema smell!
TEACHING GOOD BASICS IS HARDER
THAN I IMAGINED!
