Within hours they had a prescription (there is a pharmacy on property). Dr. Mariela visited me later after her shift at my guest room to fully explain the test results, side effects of medication, why it was needed and told me she would be happy to consult my family doctor via Skype or phone to explain. Now what doctor does that – makes guest room calls and offers to call the family doctor.

Welcome to the Kurotel difference.

KUROTEL – A BEACON FOR GOOD HEALTH

Kurotel, has been providing health and wellness programs since it opened in 1982. It features 35 well-appointed guest rooms (planned room expansion in 2017) and suites with the resort’s main building featuring combined touches of Europe, Mediterranean, and Brazil in its room décor, artwork, and tapestries. Many rooms offer views of the beautifully landscaped courtyard with vibrantly coloured plants surrounding the Kneipp cold water therapy pool to help soothe those aching muscles after an invigorating morning walk.

Dr. Mariela explains its philosophy. “Kurotel offers a scientific approach to wellness through lifestyle changes and balanced health. In the past three decades, we have strived to be high tech and high touch, combining technology and scientific knowledge to a more inclusive and humanized level.”

Yes I was impressed with all the latest technology in medical equipment they have but that’s not what sets Kurotel apart. It’s the multidisciplinary approach to guest’s health and wellness and it’s something more spas in North America would do well to emulate. I have never experienced it to this level.

Kurotel is made up of a team of professionals that includes the medical director, nutritionists, acupuncturists, psychologists, RMTs, dermatologists, dental surgeons, fitness instructors, physiotherapists, chefs, nurses, aestheticians, and a full complement of medical technicians and staff.

Kurotel offers guests a full range of programmes and services. Raising the bar and being innovative in the medical health and wellbeing sector are their trademarks and they have won numerous world medical and spa awards. Guests come mainly for weight loss and stress control. Other specific programmes include healthy longevity, smoking cessation, preoperative, post-cancer, kinder kur (mother and baby programme) and an innovative brain therapy programme.

There is also a new fitness and spa program as well as new tests and treatments such as a food genetic test, polysomnography (to detect sleep disorders) and healthy memory test and spirituality program to enhance overall health.

It all comes down to the specific needs and goals. At Kurotel a cookie-cutter approach is not in their lexicon. “The medical consultation must lead to more than just a clinical diagnosis, it must identify the needs of each client and what they are expecting to achieve,” explains Dr. Mariela.

Personalized service. Even by the end of the first day all the medical and non-medical personnel know my name. I think some knew me as, “Chris the high blood pressure guy!” or maybe it was just the crazy Canuck.

The multidisciplinary approach works well. Before you even arrive at Kurotel you send along your medical information and past history so they can start developing a program for you. All the information from each professional you meet, medical and otherwise, is loaded into your file and system network. Each team member is kept up to date on your progress and what has been recommended so each element is in sync with one another. It’s all about total wellness.
