You ride in a gondola car to the top of Sandia Crest, offering breathtaking views of Albuquerque. It is the world's longest aerial tramway. Sandia Peak Ski Area is at the top, and this can be a great way to get to the slopes if you don't like driving on snowy mountain roads.
I also visited Petroglyph National Monument, where ancient people carved images onto the black volcanic rock west of Albuquerque. It was amazing how many individual petroglyphs there were on the one hill I walked up. Maybe I'll say more about Petroglyph in a future Park of The Month article.
The next morning, the Sandias were dusted with snow, and it turned out to be a beautiful day. Unfortunately, I had to pack up and drive to Texas that day. On my way back, on Interstate 40 in Albuquerque, I saw two hot air balloons in the distance. I sure timed my trip wrong!
