Southern Arizona is a paradise for birders. Here are a few of the birds commonly seen in the park: Vermillion Flycatchers, Whiskered Screech Owls, Gila Woodpeckers, Gambel's Quail, Northern Goshawks, Yellow-eyed Juncos, Mexican Jays, Anna's Hummingbirds, and of course, the Roadrunner. In addition to the cacti, birds, and desert tortoises, Saguaro National Park hosts a wide variety of lizards. The more noteworthy ones are the venomous Gila Monster and the Regal Horned Lizard. The latter is the largest horned lizard found in the United States. The horned lizards like to hang out near saguaros, and they eat ants. Another interesting fact about horned lizards is that if a predator is about to attack them, the lizards shoot blood out of an opening in their eyelid.
