Travels with Eamon-Silverton, Colorado
gambling, robbing and prostitution. Those days are long gone now, although many historic buildings remain in the Silverton National Historic District. When I visit Silverton, I always walk down-
town and take a look at all of the cool
old buildings. Many are now hotels or
shops where you can bring home
a souvenir from your wonderful trip to
Silverton. When I pull off hwy 550,
I like stopping in at the Brown Bear
Cafe, for a slice of the delicious
Mountain Berry Pie. They serve
sandwiches, soups, and salads in an
Old West atmosphere, complete with
a tin ceiling and a beautiful old bar.
The burgers and fries are good, and
they are locally famous for their
Corned Beef Sandwiches. After a nice lunch at the Brown Bear, and a stroll down Greene and Blair Streets, I head off into the mountains, searching for a nice spot to do some fly-fishing. There are a lot of good trout streams in the area, and if you can catch them, the trout make a lovely dinner. I love to spend all afternoon up in the mountains, fishing for trout, and just soaking in the wonderful mountain landscape. After a while, I put down my flyrod and lie on the riverbank with my feet in the cold
mountain stream. Two magpies fly
overhead, while many more birds call
from the sweet-scented conifers
covering the mountains and valleys.
This is my favorite part of Silverton;
a peaceful day of solitude in the lovely
high country. When evening comes,
I'm off to find a campsite, on the vast
tracts of Forest Service and BLM
lands open to the public.
