Finally, I will talk about

snowmobiling. this activity combines

high speed thrill with beautiful winter

scenery. There are thousands of snow-

mobile trails, most of them in Colorado.

National Forests offer many trails, and

snowmobiles are easily rented. I have

never been on a snowmobile, (skiing is

more my pace) but some find it a great

way to experience the outdoors without

physical strain. Colorado is a great place

for riding snowmobiles, but New Mexico's

Sangre de Christo Mountains also offer

trails and lessons. Utah also offers some

great snowmobiling. Newcomers to the

sport can find many instructors and guided snowmobile tours.

Regional Highlights

Below are some of the best places for snow sports, sorted by state.

New Mexico

My favorite ski resorts are Red River and Taos Ski Valley. Red River is located in the wonderful village of the same name, northeast of Taos. It offers some great downhill skiing, including a ski-through miner's camp. The town is located right at the foot of the mountain, and has good dining and lodging options. Red River gets over 214" of snowfall each year, and they do extensive snow-making, meaning the resort has a long season. www.redriverskiarea.com

Taos Ski Valley has wonderful views and scenery, located in the heart of the Enchanted Circle and the Sangre De Christo Mountains. Taos is very popular, and offers an awesome experience. skitaos.org

Sipapu Ski Resort south of Taos is one of the most family friendly ski resorts in the southwest, and also boasts the longest ski season in New Mexico. Sipapu has trails for every skill level, and is cheaper than the bigger New Mexican Resorts. sipapunm.com

Angel Fire Resort, in the village of Angel Fire offers many activities, including snow-

boarding, a 2,000' vertical drop, Glade & X-Country skiing, and over 200" of snow annually. www.angelfireresort.com
