5 Southwest Highways & Fields

February brings more snow and cold weather to most of the Southwest, so Skiing and other snowsports are the focal point of outdoor recreation this month. In warmer regions, birdwatching and hiking are quite enjoyable, with cool daytime temperatures. Round up the family, and go enjoy the outdoors this month!

Texas

February offers nice hiking weather in most of the state. Visit a nearby State Park and hit the trail, either in your boots, or on your bike. February sometimes brings the coldest temperatures of the year, so check the weather forecast, or bundle up. Bass fishing can be rewarding on some lakes, the Crappie are biting well this month, and catfish can be hooked in the eastern part of the state.

Chachalaca, Quail and Snipe can be hunted through most of February, some Geese can be hunted in certain regions, and Turkey can be hunted in Brooks, Kenedy, Willacy, and Kleberg Counties. The Deer season has come to a close, along with East Texas Squirrel hunting. Check out the hunting seasons here: http://tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/hunt/season/animal_listing/

Birdwatching, especially for ducks, can be very rewarding this month. Why not combine a Kayak or Canoe trip with a birding excursion, looking for waterfowl while paddling your favorite lake or river. Camping in State and National Parks is a fun way to enjoy the outdoors. Nights are usually chilly, so bring warm bedding, and some marshmallows for roasting.

Whether you live in Texas or not, why not pack up the kids, some camping gear and a fishing rod, and have a fun weekend at one of Texas' many State Parks.
