The waters of Lake Tawakoni east of Dallas hold plenty of

Channel Catfish big enough for the frying pan. This time of year,

try fishing for them in deeper channels close to trees and reeds.

Escape the bustle of the city and head to Government Canyon

State Natural Area, only 27 miles away from downtown San

Antonio. The wilderness park has over 40 miles of hiking trails

that wind through the canyons and grasslands. The endangered

Golden-cheeked Warbler can be seen here.

Alligator season begins this month, and the spring turkey hunts

begin in some areas April 15.

Birding on the Gulf Coast is great during the spring migration. The

coastal islands are excellent, but even spots as far inland as

Choke Canyon are very good. The Aransas National Wildlife

Refuge near Rockport and the Padre Island National Seashore

near Corpus Christi are each worth spending a day exploring. If

you are not near a coast check out the nearest State Park, where

migrants can be found stopping for a snack.

The weather is great for camping out at Lake Mineral Wells State

Park. Fishing in the lake and climbing the rock formations is a

great way to enjoy the outdoors. Mountain biking, horseback

riding, and hiking are pleasant on the 20-mile trailway. There

are several camping options: Water, Electric, Hike-in Primitive,

and Equestrian.
