Southwest Highways April 2013 | Page 52

There is a tower you can climb to look for dolphins, but it can also score you some good bird sightings. My favorite was a Red-breasted Merganser feeding a few feet from the rocks that line the channel.

There are more places to bird on Mustang Island, but these are my favorites. You can’t go wrong with any of these hot spots, and there are always other birders there to point out what they have seen. If the birds are too far away, sometimes you can get lucky by finding a birder with a scope who might offer to let you take a quick peek at whatever they have in their sights. No matter where you go on the coast in April, you will more than likely get some new entries for your life list, and maybe even catch sight of a Frigatebird heading back out to sea.
