Highland teen donates hair to charity
By MARK REYNOLDS mreynolds @ tcnewspapers . com
For the past two years , fifteen yearold Breanna Smith has been letting her hair grow , with the intention of having it cut off and donated to Locks of Love . They are a , “ public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under 21 suffering from long term medical hair loss from any diagnosis .” Locks of Love points out that these free hairpieces return , “ a sense of self confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss .”
Smith decided to make the donation because both of her grandmothers died from cancer , “ so I wanted to do it for them .” One grandmother died at the age of 79 and the other was 61 when she passed .
Lauriann Marion , of Fashion Cutters , said two years of growing her hair , “ for a teenager seems like forever .” After having her hair cut Breanna will send it off to Locks of Love .
“ They do a wonderful job and to make somebody happy that has lost their hair from chemotherapy is a good thing ,” Marion said . “ A lot more younger girls are letting their hair grow to actually donate it .”
Marion said the minimum donation length used to be 12 inches but today it
figure out how to do this without raising taxes ; I think we would all agree to that ,” he said . “ We ’ re going to have to come up with creative ways and creative ideas with the budget to actually do this project .”
Lanzetta cautioned Corcoran , warning that the town might have to fund this with a BAN or a Bond , with Corcoran responding that , “ by the same token the town and Town Board is not in need of a $ 2 million dollar building ... my comfortable spot is $ 1.5 million or $ 1.7 million , maybe .”
Councilman Koenig agreed with not hitting the $ 2 million plus mark and favors a limit of $ 1.2 million instead . He stressed that the board should first obtain realistic cost estimates .
Resident Mici Simonofsky urged the board to not sell TOMVAC .
“ I think that your ill-advised to sell it at this point when we actually don ’ t know
Lauriann Marion , of Fashion Cutters , is about to cut off 10 inches of Breanna Smith ’ s hair that she will donate to Locks of Love . In turn , they will make free hairpieces for children who have lost their hair due to illness .
is 10 inches . They also now accept dyed hair .
“ It makes it so much easier because a lot of people would not donate their hair when it was colored ,” she said , adding that all hair textures are accepted from
what we ’ re going to have a need for in the future ,” she said . “ If it turns out that this doesn ’ t work out with the school , then that acreage [ at TOMVAC ] might lend itself to have a recreation center on Route 9W .” She further added that if the school district ever needed the town administrative offices back , TOMVAC might prove to be a perfect site for a Town Hall .
Corcoran said the present Town Board created a business overlay district in the 9W corridor , where TOMVAC sits , and the building would be more appropriate for commercial usage , while garnering taxes for the town . He said Simonofsky is looking backwards with the idea of renovating TOMVAC , while he wants to move forward with building a new recreation center .
“ Let ’ s make the proceeds from it go towards the community and make a recreation center that will actually work ... and a center we can be proud of both genders .
When asked if she is sad to see her hair go or is it OK , Breanna responded , “ A little bit of both ,” but she promised to return in a few years to make another donation .

and utilize it the proper way ,” he said .
Corcoran said if the town ever had to move their administrative offices , which he doubts would ever happen , they would be able to relocate to another town parcel or occupy the new recreation center and modify it in a way to serve that need .
Corcoran criticized Supervisor Lanzetta and Councilman Howard Baker , saying they do not want to make TOMVAC a taxpaying business . Baker shot back , saying after the sale , the annual taxes of approximately $ 16,000 was not going to solve the financial challenges facing Marlborough . Corcoran countered , “ So what are we saying , taxable income means nothing anymore ?” Baker said it may be a wash because the town is going to have to pay , “ on the other side ” of the equation when it comes to the new recreation center .
Simonofsky said the board was
