Highland Fire Department hosts Open House

By MARK REYNOLDS mreynolds @ tcnewspapers . com
Each year during October ’ s Fire Prevention Week , Fire Departments across the country open their doors and invite parents and kids inside to see their operations and to offer their community tips that save lives if one is ever caught in a fire .
Fire Prevention Week is held in October as a remembrance of the Great Chicago Fire , which began on the morning of October 8 , 1871 in a barn on DeKoven Street and burned for three days , resulting in $ 200 million in damages that left 300 people dead and 100,000 homeless across a 3.3 square mile swath of the city , southwest of the Loop .
Highland Fire Chief Peter Miller said they have been hosting an Open House every year since the 1980s . He said the National Fire Protection Association ’ s [ NFPA ] theme for 2017 is ‘ Every Second Counts ’. As a result of the Chicago Fire the NFPA is involved in promoting guidelines for building and for electrical codes so “ all those things that have to do with fire safety and elevators , you name it .”
“ They [ NFPA ] put a theme out and target it when they go to the schools and it could be anything from cooking issues that you have in the kitchen to what you should do when you see a fire or fire escape and setting up a place to meet
Parents and kids learned about all of the equipment on a fire truck .

outside the house ; all different things they target to try to keep it fresh . It goes out with the coloring books , the coloring contest and the literature when they go to the schools and the day care centers ,” Miller said .
Miller said his department brings their fire trucks , along with all of their gear , to give the kids at school an up close view of their firefighting techniques and equipment . He said at the Open House every kid who comes gets a prize . The Lloyd Police Department and Mobile Life Support Services also had a presence at the Open House .
Driver Steve Lee said the theme of ‘ Every Second Counts ’ is about making
sure there are two quick ways out of a house in case of a fire .
“ The normal way out is by the door but if that is blocked you have to have a second means or either possibly going out a window as long as you can get out safely . If they can ’ t get out safely we tell them to be by the window and have a towel , a pillow case or a flashlight shining out because the fire department is going to do a 360 degree around the house looking to see what is going on to see what actions they need to do . If they see a pillow case , they ’ re going to know and put a ladder up to a high window and make the rescue .”
