Yelle’s family about this oversight and on Sunday he conferred the honor at a special surprise ceremony that was held at the Plattekill Veterans Memorial Park. “I think this is just a perfect day. It is a brisk, not too cold autumn day and it’s a day when the sun is shining on everyone in Plattekill,” Faso began. Faso said there are some Veterans, “who may have not have gotten the recognition or acknowledgment that they should have received for their service and there is one such Veteran that is here today. I want to particularly note a Veteran who served in the Korean War and was a Sergeant, Fred Yelle. Today, we’re going to provide Fred’s Bronze Star to him for his meritorious service to our country in Korea. On behalf of the Secretary of the Army and the President of the United States, it is my honor as a member of Congress for the 19th Congressional District to finally award Fred Yelle the Bronze Star for your meritorious service and your valor to the American people and to the United States Army in the Korean Conflict. God bless you and may this medal always serve as a remembrance to you and to your family, for many generations to come, of your service, of your sacrifice, of your dedication to the United States of America. May God bless you, may God bless this great country and all of our Veterans, but today, especially in Sgt. Fredrick Yelle is surrounded by his family at the Bronze Star ceremony. Plattekill, may God bless Fred. Thank you for your service.” Faso also presented an American Flag to Sgt. Yelle that was folded and preserved in a triangular wooden frame. Faso also pinned the Bronze Star on Sgt. Yelle. In a subsequent interview, Congressman Faso said Fred’s daughter Gail informed him about her father. “It really was an honor and you can tell he was overwhelmed. He didn’t know that this was going to happen,” she said. Faso said Sgt. Yelle was in a number of brutal engagements during a very difficult and challenging war, “often in very austere winter weather.” Faso said ceremonies like this are very inspirational and an important way for the United States to honor and recognize Veterans.
