Recently the Lloyd Environmental
Conservation Council [ECC] threw a
party at Underground Coffee and Ales
in Highland to thank their members
and all who volunteered to construct the
Black Creek Canoe and Kayak Launch,
located on the south side of Rte. 299
where it intersects with the Black Creek.
Chairman Jack Maguire said the
journey to provide access to the Black
Creek started in 2000, with the planning
of a water trail and later construction
of a stairway leading down to the creek
off of the Hudson Valley Rail Trail.
The canoe and kayak launch project
began in 2012 with grant applications
that resulted in a $15,000 grant and the
construction was completed in 2015. He
pointed out that the town’s initial share
was $7,500 but that was whittled down
to $200 through the use of volunteers,
donated supplies and in-kind services.
“All across the spectrum of Lloyd
people were volunteering and it made
me very appreciative of more people in
Lloyd than I was before,” Maguire said.
Maguire also thanked a host of
others who came to the party who
supported the efforts of the ECC to
build the launch; members of the
Hudson Valley Greenway Communities
Council who earmarked some money
from a matching grant to build the
launch, the Lloyd Town Board that
approved funds to help pay for the
matching grant, members of the NYS
Department of Transportation and of
the NYS Department of Environmental
Conservation who assisted in the

Sara Niccoli
Sara Niccoli lives on a farm where her
husband Sean Mallinson grew up and
they raise sheep for their wool and meat
and have a small vegetable operation in
season. Niccoli is currently in her second
term as the Supervisor of the Town of
Palatine in Montgomery County. She said
she loved her first run for office.
“I got really into the race and what I
love is getting out and talking to people,
knocking on doors and hearing about
what’s going on in their lives. I worked
really hard and I ended up winning that
race.” For her second race she formed
the Responsible Government Party with
Democrats and Republicans to create a
more functional town government “and
we won handily against the town council
and we are three Republicans and two
Democrats.”
Niccoli said her family has been dealing
with the impact of the controversial
Common Core curriculum and its high
stakes testing as their daughter Olive
was “in the thick of the roll out” of
the program. Niccoli said her opponent
George Amedore in 2015 voted to extend
this controversial educational program
