TIMES SOUTHERN ULSTER Vol. 13, No 44 3 NOVEMBER 2 - 8, 2016 ONE DOLLAR Milton’s Monster Mash Page 22 SERVING HIGHLAND, MARLBOROUGH AND PLATTEKILL Canoe launch completed Environmental Council gives thanks to volunteers By MARK REYNOLDS [email protected] Recently the Lloyd Environmental Conservation Council [ECC] threw a party at Underground Coffee and Ales in Highland to thank their members and all who volunteered to construct the Black Creek Canoe and Kayak Launch, located on the south side of Rte. 299 where it intersects with the Black Creek. Chairman Jack Maguire said the journey to provide access to the Black Creek started in 2000, with the planning of a water trail and later construction of a stairway leading down to the creek off of the Hudson Valley Rail Trail. The canoe and kayak launch project began in 2012 with grant applications that resulted in a $15,000 grant and the construction was completed in 2015. He pointed out that the town’s initial share was $7,500 but that was whittled down to $200 through the use of volunteers, donated supplies and in-kind services. “All across the spectrum of Lloyd people were volunteering and it made me very appreciative of more people in Lloyd than I was before,” Maguire said. Maguire also thanked a host of others who came to the party who supported the efforts of the ECC to build the launch; members of the Hudson Valley Greenway Communities Council who earmarked some money from a matching grant to build the launch, the Lloyd Town Board that approved funds to help pay for the matching grant, members of the NYS Department of Transportation and of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation who assisted in the Continued on page 4 3 Niccoli faces Amedore in NYS Senate race By MARK REYNOLDS [email protected] Democrat Sara Niccoli is seeking to unseat incumbent Republican George Amedore in the NYS 46th Senate district. Sue Frampton The Black Creek in late November WWW.SOUTHERNULSTERTIMES.COM Sara Niccoli Sara Niccoli lives on a farm where her husband Sean Mallinson grew up and they raise sheep for their wool and meat and have a small vegetable operation in season. Niccoli is currently in her second term as the Supervisor of the Town of Palatine in Montgomery County. She said she loved her first run for office. “I got really into the race and what I love is getting out and talking to people, knocking on doors and hearing about what’s going on in their lives. I worked really hard and I ended up winning that race.” For her second race she formed the Responsible Government Party with Democrats and Republicans to create a more functional town government “and we won handily against the town council and we are three Republicans and two Democrats.” Niccoli said her family has been dealing with the impact of the controversial Common Core curriculum and its high stakes testing as their daughter Olive was “in the thick of the roll out” of the program.
