Plattekill

AK Farms
racetrack

For months the Plattekill Town
Board has been discussing whether to
initiate a new agreement that would
allow motocross racing to continue at the
AK Farms racetrack after it was shut
down last December in accordance with
a court-ordered stipulation. That hope
evaporated last month for track owner
Anthony Kalamucki after the Town Board
was polled, with Councilpersons Dean
DePew, Cindy Delgado and Mike Putnam
against and Supervisor Joe Croce in favor.
Councilman Larry Farrelly was absent.
The court stipulation was signed in
2001 and had a sunset provision dated Dec.
31, 2015 after which racing was to cease
on the property. In the past few months
Kalamucki’s attorney Mario DeMarco
made his pitch to the Town Board for
a new agreement, something the board
seriously considered, but in the end a
majority of the board decided to uphold
the terms of the stipulation.
Town attorney John Cappello informed
the board that they have the power to allow
racing to continue at the site. He suggested
they first consider whether or not this
business is a benefit to the town and if so,
they would then have to amend the law
on this matter. This would pave the way
for Kalamucki to proceed to the Planning
Board for site plan review. Cappello

Rotary honors Donna Deeprose for community service
By MARK REYNOLDS

Each year the Highland Rotary
Club chooses an individual who is not a
member but who best exemplifies their
central tenet, Service Above Self. This
year Donna Deeprose was chosen from
among five candidates in a silent ballot
by the club to be this year’s honoree.
Deeprose was surprised upon
learning that she would be the 2016
honoree from Rotary President Sue
Naglieri.
“I was flabbergasted. I didn’t know
what to think, I didn’t know what to say,
I had no idea,” she said, recalling that
Naglieri urged her to “just say yes.”
Deeprose said she was busy during
the day leading up to the special dinner
and by late in the afternoon she said, “I
just started to feel good and relaxed and
here it feels like a party of all of my best
friends.”
Rotary highlighted Deeprose’s service
to the community. She developed a
diorama model of the Highland Bob
Shepard Park that was instrumental
in bringing the park to the public’s
attention at the time of the referendum
vote and later secured $1.2 million in
grant money for its development.
Deeprose created a system to allow
donors to memorialize a loved one on
a plaque that will be mounted on the
bulkhead at the edge of the Hudson
River.
Deeprose has also been a longstanding board member of the Town of
Lloyd Historical Preservation Society.
She issues press releases on their
upcoming programs and later submits
articles to the local media about their
